christmas and the germans part 3

just a few kilometres away from fussen is the fairy-tale castle that inspired walt disney to create cinderella's castle in disney theme parks - the neuschwanstein castle.

it looks very, very romantic from afar and from up-close.the neo-romanesque castle was commissioned by king ludwig of bavaria as a retreat and homage to richard wagner.

the location of the castle itself is awesome.

there's another castle nearby called hohenschwangau. it used to be the childhood residence of king ludwig.

it's not as grand as the fairy-tale castle, though.

you can either walk or take a carriage to see the neuschwanstein.

we chose to walk.

and boy, was i glad we did, because it was there, on the way up to the fairy-tale castle, that i experienced my first ever snowfall.

it started slowly.i did not even notice it.i looked up, and for a split second, i wondered what was the powdery white thing that was falling gracefully?

and when i realized that those were snowflakes, i stood like a statue in the middle of the road, and was just in pure awe.it was amazing.

and when i looked up again, the fairy-tale castle just stood there so majestically.

enter and be awe-struck

i do not have photos of the interiors - either phototaking was not allowed or i was too awestruck to click my camera.

we left at nightfall.

the two castles were eerily beautiful.

this was one of my most memorable trips in my life.

and i'm always, always thankful for these opportunities.

we will go to munich and vienna in a few days' time, and i am wishing that moments spent there will be as magical for baby as it was for me.she may not remember everything when she's all grown-up, but boy, will she love the stories that i will regal her with.

next - more christmas markets!
