Wonder of the World 2: Great Wall of China and Beijing Memories

day 1

finally my long waaayy overdue beijing post! mr t and i took this trip back in august 2008 during the olympics! and with the 2012 summer olympics fast approaching, i better get my lazy a** moving to writing down this post.

so why beijing, you might ask.and i may answer, why not, coconut? first, there was the olympics, and second, there was the great wall of china.that would tick off one of our seven wonders of the world list.

we stayed for five days in beijing in a hutong area.now beijing could not get any more authentic than this.we bid adieu to fancy hotels (and steep prices!) and decided to stay in a no-frills courtyard hotel.it's been 3 years, and i cannot, for the life of me, remember its name.

simply put, "hutong" are alleyways in beijing.they are believed to be 800 years old.

we arrived on a rainy day.

but that did not dampen our spirits.we were so hungry so we dashed off to the nearest restaurant we saw.of course we could not speak any chinese dialect at all.we just pointed at photos and got these:

we had to grill all these different meat ourselves.jesus, they were very delicious.that i can remember.

we took cabs, buses and the subway to navigate our way across the city.we also did a lot of walking! mr t and i were kinda excited about all the olympics hoopla that we immediately went to the olympics village.

we passed by this interesting-looking building.

the buildings that the chinese government built were equally stunning.

a welcome sign

beijing national stadium (or bird's nest) - breathtaking!

beijing national aquatic center at night - lovely!

my camera was not very high-tech so the photos do not really do justice to the magnificence of the buildings.sorry, di ko afford super cameras.hehe.

being a field hockey player, mt was quite happy to get tickets for one of the (germany) women's hockey games.

Next...some sunshine!
